A new limited edition rum marks the seventh release in Mount Gay's Master Blender Collection, featuring a revived coffey still.

This particular rum, the Mount Gay Coffey Still, is crafted from local molasses and produced in a still that had been out of operation since 1976. This is the first time Mount Gay has utilized its 100% copper coffey still since its recommissioning in 2019, following decades of dormancy. The release pays homage to the late distiller Reynold ‘Blues’ Hinds, who passed away in 2021 and played a pivotal role in restoring the still.

Master blender Trudiann Branker reflected on the creation of this rum as a deep dive into Mount Gay's rich history, noting that Blues' significant impact on their rums is beyond measure. This release honours his legacy and the craftsmanship synonymous with Mount Gay.

Mount Gay The Master Blender Collection: The Coffey Still Expression is made exclusively from Barbadian molasses and aged for four years in heavily charred ex-Bourbon barrels. Bottled at 58% ABV, it is priced at US$240.

Branker describes the distillery’s coffey still as a “quiet giant” compared to its more renowned pot stills. Initially uncertain about the still’s potential, she discovered a distillate with a distinct grapefruit character.

The final product presents aromas of pear, vanilla, and nutmeg, with flavours of grapefruit, oak, and honey on the palate. According to Branker, this bottling comes from the first still run in 2019, and Mount Gay has continued to use the coffey still annually in limited quantities, with plans to feature it in future releases.

The Coffey Still Expression joins other notable releases in the Master Blender Collection, such as Andean Oak, Port Cask, and Pot Still Rum.
