To say that I love the design world and design in general is an understatement. It is something that I live, love and embrace in everything I do. I am a designer first and foremost in my life and wear that hat proudly!

Interior designers must know how to plan a space, drafting, technical specifications and how to present that plan visually to clientele. Interior designers must also know about the materials and products that will be used to create and furnish the space, and how texture, color, lighting and other factors combine and interact to make a space. In addition, interior designers must understand the structural requirements of their plans, the health and safety issues, building codes, and many other technical aspects. Interior designers must have excellent time and project management abilities since they often work on more than one project at a time under demanding deadlines. Interior designers must understand business planning, and they need to know how to sell their ideas to clients, create informative and persuasive proposals and presentations.

How does this contribute to Barbados’ competitiveness?

What’s your vision for Barbados?

SBID_Kitchen

My vision for Barbados is quite simple, I feel as a Barbadian/Canadian by decent we need to remember our soul character and stay true to who we are as a country. That being said I would love to see our old buildings be protected and save the beautiful architecture and design that makes and made us so unique and special. The craftsmanship and artisans of the past were truly artists in their own right, so I would love to see what we have left be taken and brought back to it’s glory. I also would love to see Barbados become a destination for all people affordable as well as higher end clientele creating a fabulous balance of people from around the world. I want for Barbados a great future encompassing our heritage into our new phases forward.

What are your skills and qualifications?

I have immersed myself in the spirit and lifestyle of the design world both in the Caribbean and North America and in Europe down to product as well.

I received my Associates Degree AA in Interior Design at the Art Institute of Vancouver graduating top designer of the alumni.

SBID_BathroomNow the director of Stephanie Barnes Interior Design Studio in Barbados, my full-service interior design firm specializes in private residences, restaurants, and hotels in Barbados and Canada.

In 2013 Stephanie Barnes Interior Design Studio received an Americas Property Award for Commercial Leisure Interior Category in Barbados Highest 5 Star Achievement from the International Property Awards sponsored by Virgin Atlantic and Yamaha.

What contributed to your success?

At the end of the day if you are doing what you truly love success will follow suit at some point. Attention to detail, service and making sure each and every project we are involved in is as individual as the owner or the clientele. Design is something you live and if you pass this onto each project success will be a part of that. In terms of early years I have to credit a extremely supportive family who pushed me to continue to go after my dreams from an early age and to never give up. Success is what you make of it and I believe you get what you put in and it truly will have a wonderful result in the end.
