Verdun House the leading substance abuse facility on the island has embraced the sustainability revolution and become a Green Business. The Substance Abuse Foundation Inc. that owns and operates the facility realized one of their board’s strategic planning goals for 2010 to become a green institution through the implementation of the Green Business Barbados programme administered by the Future Centre Trust. The board realized the need to invest in a green business programme in order to reduce their overall environmental footprint and the cost of water, energy, paper and other inputs needed for operation.

As a Green Business Verdun House reuses and/or recycles all plastics, glass, metals, paper, cardboard, ink and toner cartridges and e-waste. They also have implemented an educational programme to train clients and employees on ways to reduce water, energy and overall consumption not only at work but also in their own homes. On the farm at Verdun rain water is harvested and used and in the garden permaculture practises have been introduced in order to reduce the need to use harmful pesticides and herbicides that have the potential to contaminate our drinking water and decimate our ecosystems. Finally Verdun House has made a commitment to becoming more energy independent in the future in order to ensure its own sustainability as a leading non-profit organization.
