US-based company Lenstec established its sole manufacturing unit in Barbados in 1996 and it has grown over the years to the point where it now employs in excess of 160 staff at its state-of-the-art facility, producing more than 500,000 intraocular lenses a year. These tiny, painstakingly accurate lenses are used in cataract replacement surgery and are exported from Lenstec’s Barbados facility to more than 50 countries.
Lenstec is one of only two companies that manufacture these lenses outside of the US that has approval to sell in the US. We have achieved much of our commercial success by virtue of having chosen to set up our manufacturing arm in Barbados. Barbados offers a good level of infrastructure; including excellent transport links, which have facilitated Lenstec’s service image. Orders can be delivered to European customers within two days.
Barbados places a high value on education and Lenstec is justifiably proud of our excellent locally recruited staff and our continued growth in staff levels over the years. I moved to Barbados from New Zealand in 1996, after a career establishing pharmaceutical and medical device research and manufacturing facilities in Australasia, Africa and Asia. Putting down roots and raising a family so far from ˜home” has been made easier by Barbados being such a healthy place for a family to grow up, with world class education for children, a low crime rate and access to excellent sports and leisure. If the island occasionally feels a little small, it’s easy to spend a day on the sea and come back feeling rebalanced and glad to be alive in this little paradise.
