‘Incoming international investors are sometimes surprised to discover that Barbadian companies can provide them with the same high levels of service and products that they have grown accustomed to in their own countries or elsewhere in the wider world. The reality is that the modern-day Barbadian entrepreneurs are as switched on as anybody and they are constantly on the lookout for new technologies that can give them a competitive advantage and position to compete in the Caribbean region and beyond. That is how our own company Rtek Services Ltd. has managed to adapt and grow, despite the recent economic slump.

My father, Andrew Lashley, founded Rtek in 1986 with nothing more than a tool belt, a $1,000 start-up budget and his unswerving commitment to succeed. The company grew quickly, mainly as a result of hard work, regular training, being innovative and constantly remaining ahead of the technology curve. Today Rtek operates throughout the entire Caribbean, with clients all the way from Jamaica in the north through Barbados to Trinidad in the south, offering a broad range of world-class refrigeration, air-conditioning and building automation solutions, as well as state-of-the-art energy management solutions.

After the building boom experienced an abrupt slowdown around 2007, we were very aware that the market trends would rapidly shift towards greater efficiency in operating systems, with a particular emphasis on money-saving energy controls. We saw that as a big opportunity to expand our company by helping clients to improve the existing infrastructure of their office, manufacturing plant or any other business location. So, in response to the fact that consumers were becoming wiser and demanding higher quality, more efficient systems that would last longer, we decided to join forces with companies like Mitsubishi Electric, the world leader in VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow technology), Dunham-Bush and Distech Controls.

These relationships proved to be a success and we later went on to win the rights to become the Caribbean partner for Distech Controls. Distech is the innovation leader in energy Management Solutions and Building Automation and that has enabled Rtek to now provide Building Management technologies and services that optimize Energy Efficiency, Sustainability and Comfort in buildings, all the while reducing operating costs and enabling the user remote site control. Distech components and software allow for controlling and monitoring applications like building access, security, lighting, water, energy consumption and HVAC systems. There are sensors for adjusting the AC temperature according to whether a room is occupied or not, thermostats that can monitor carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and deliver fresh air when required, sensors that turn on and off lights in respect to sunlight pouring in through nearby windows and trending of energy consumption on a per sq/ft basis.

In addition to saving money by reducing energy consumption, the real-time monitoring of conditions can provide an immediate warning if anything starts to go wrong by automatically alerting building operators and maintenance personnel, helping to avoid breakdowns and provide savings in the long run.

Distech Controls can be used to monitor numerous buildings at the same time, even if they are located in different countries. Not only does this allow people control and monitoring of their building’s from anywhere with an internet connection, but also compares their respective running costs so that maximum efficiency can be attained at all times. This same concept can be applied very effectively to a single site that has numerous rooms operating independently or as one, such as hotels, offices, labs or manufacturing facilities.

Rtek Services with Distech Controls has helped the new Goddard Enterprises headquarters become the type of world-class, smart building that Barbados can deliver. This building exemplifies what we can do to make our buildings green, sustainable and totally business-friendly even for the world’s leading companies. Standards are not sacrificed or office requirements compromised when they establish in Barbados; working here can be just as comfortable and efficient as working in any major city around the world. The big difference is you can enjoy our fantastic lifestyle when you leave the office!

It is that combination that makes Barbados the #1 choice for sustainable investing, working and living.’
